What to do in the first 24 hours

What to do in the first 24 hours

Obtaining the medical certificate, official registration and contacting the cemetery — a short, clear sequence of the steps to take on the first day.

Thinking clearly in the first hours is hard. It is enough simply to follow the sequence below from top to bottom.

Step 1 — Official confirmation of death

If it happened at home, call an ambulance; a doctor confirms the fact of death. If it happened in hospital, the institution issues the document itself. No further step is possible without it.

Step 2 — Call a funeral service

Calling at this stage means collection, keeping and preparation begin immediately. Delay causes problems, especially in the warm months.

Step 3 — The death certificate

On the basis of the medical statement, the registry office issues the certificate. You will need the identity document of the deceased and of the person applying.

Step 4 — The cemetery

If there is a family plot, its documentation is presented; if not, a new plot is allocated. This is usually the most time-consuming part of the day and should be handled in parallel with the rest.

Step 5 — Announcing the ceremony

Once the time of the burial is fixed, relatives are informed and the place of mourning and the commemoration meal are arranged.
